From March 26-28, 2023, Gakurin Koju Program University students held the Spring Retreat at Gyogakuen and Asian Rural Institute in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture. On the first day, they attended the Gakurin President’s lecture on the founding spirit of Gakurin and the mission of Gakurin students at Gyogakuen, visited the Great Sacred Hall, and toured the Founder’s Memorial Museum to experience Gakurin founder Rev. Nikkyo Niwano’s engaged Buddhism and his steps toward world peace through interreligious cooperation, and to renew their commitments as Gakurin Koju students. On the second and third days, they studied “food, life, and peace” at Asian Rural Institute in Nasushiobara City, Tochigi Prefecture, and conversed with Christian leaders and practitioners from 20 countries around the world. It was an important opportunity for the students to realize that in the holistic education at Gakurin, gratitude for one’s own life, harmony with nature, and awareness of the importance of food are connected to peace of mind, peace in society, and peace in the world.
